Review

As advertised this cozy mystery has quirky characters and humor. Eve is convinced that something will go wrong and her best friend, Jill, is there to keep watch and be sure Eve is accused of the murder that hasn't happened yet, and then once the billionaire's assistant is murdered, to keep her out of trouble. Both women are dating police officers, and Jack and Josh do their part to keep a lid on the situation. Only the entourage comes with it's own quirky characters, the billionaire included, not to mention Mira and her editor, and Elsie who eventually vows not to publish anything she and her side kick have witnessed. A

The story is fast paced with twists, turns, and false leads galore. No one liked the victim and he seemed to have something on everyone associated with William Hunter III. Although this is the 7th in the series, it can be easily read as a stand alone. If you like cozy mysteries with a humorous side to murder and quirky characters, you'll enjoy this one, and probably the rest of the series as well.

Review

Larkston isn't Lila's home but she's been living there with Bibi, working on two books. The Victorian mansion is ideal for her writing goals. She's excited about her project on Bibi's writings (under a pseudonym) as she has loved these books and is surprised to find one additional book, never published. The literary analysis of the published books and Lila's own mystery will hopefully get her the needed tenure at Stonedale where she teaches.

Her visit is coming to an end and there is to be a great party, but first, one of Bibi's good friends, Margot, is killed and then the woman writing a gossip column. Bibi's friends, collectively called the Larks, are beside themselves and Bibi asks Lila to look into the murders and hopefully find the killer. Then Bibi's long missing sister, Ilse, reappears, and the chancellors of Callahan College and Stonedale are fighting over the Callahan house. 

This is a touching story of a group of friends who have weathered years and tragedy together, with many secrets, not the least of which involve the missing Ilse. There are class differences that come into play as well as competition and the need to preserve appearances. Lila has difficulty sorting it all out, even after reading Everwell, the book never published, with the secrets it holds. This is the 5th in the Lila Maclean series, but easily read as a stand alone book. A cozy mystery with friends that hamper the process, as well as a cousin and friend who aid Lila in her sleuthing in the end. Relationships and personalities are key and keep the story moving.

Review

Win (aka Bronwyn) is excited to be recreating her memories of the family creamery from when she was young. She has her MBA, a love of her grandmother's unique ice cream flavors, and dreams of her own flavors. And a dead body. One that somehow could involve a member of her family. 

It's hard not to root for Win as she pursues her dreams and the good memories. And if proving her father or mother didn't kill the man who took advantage, then she and her friends will do so. This was a fun read. I for one never had any trouble eating ice cream in the winter, though I tend to stick to the basic flavors. If you like cozy mystery, family owned businesses, and a bit of humor and romance, you'll enjoy this book.

Book Review: PERIL AT THE PELLICANO HOTEL Italian Village Mystery #4 by Adriana Licio

Review

Giò Brando is the newest member of a writer's group, set up in Maratea for writing sprints. Giò's project is a book recapping her travels to Scotland, while others are engaged in their own projects. She doesn't make much progress on her writing after the death of the not well-liked person, Margherita, who was kicked out of the group after the previous retreat. Then Mrs. Galli is found dead a few days later. Both deaths could be natural causes, but both involving wordsmiths at the same hotel, not to mention they knew each other? Giò's granny has some insights, not only on the deaths, but on Giò's growing feelings for Guido. Then there's Paolo who seeks out Giò for her insights and information not readily shared by with the carabinieri. Add in the adventures of Rolando as he woos his wife of many years.  

I decided to read this book because of my Italian roots. The description of the island and the village in Basilicata sets the stage for the activities in and out of the Pellicano Hotel. There is mystery and romance, Italian family, and likable characters. Guido has his faults, but his charm comes through and I couldn't help but like him, as did Giò. Giò's character has depth and humility. Her granny is everything you'd expect. This is the fourth in the Italian Village Mystery series, but my first. It can easily be read as a stand alone, though I wonder if there isn't some back story with Paolo.

Review

Danny, an investigative reporter, is exiled to a TV station to do a soft show where she helps neighbors address problems - problems like how to get money back when the purchased item is faulty. Not exactly what she's used to, but she hasn't figure out what her next career move should be. Then a little girl, Tamantha, asks her to help her father, a man accused of murder and then released. Her instincts kick in, and with some prodding by the hot shot ex-football player, she gets to know the people involved and a lot more about Wyoming. 

I like Danny aka E. M. Danniher. She's smart, sassy, and curious. She also has misgivings, and some insecurities.  Mike is also likable and loyal. In his own way, even the would-be bad guy, Tom Burrell, has his good points. The story is well-paced. Danny (and Mike) have to deal with obstacles at every turn, with a little help from a friend of two.  Can't miss with this one if you like a cozy mystery, with a bit of humor and romance.

Review:

A cozy mystery that focuses on the unsolved murder of Nikki Bryant and her need to answer those unanswered questions, while facing the challenge of returning home and the memories there. Nikki has her social media star dog, Elmo to help her in social situations. Her high school nemesis, Ashleigh, hints that she's solved the cold case and then is found dead. This only fuels Nikiki's resolve. At the same time, her online friend, NerdyGuy, supports her need to confront her feelings with the one guy who got away. 

Lauren Carr's writing is true to form and well-paced. Nikki's personality is strong and well-developed, and who couldn't help but love a dog who does housework and cleans up any untidy area? The plot is well-placed with two murders to be solved - the cold case of Nikki's father and the very new case of Ashleigh Addison. Add in the complicated relationship with Ryan and the story has all the components a reader could ask for. This is the first in a new series and I'm looking forward to the next already.

Book Review: YOM KILLER by Rabbi Ilene Schneider

Synopsis

Review

New owners of the assisted living setting and a growing concern with the rash of elderly who are dying. Natural causes? Rabbi Aviva Cohen and her ex-husband detective drive after the call that her mother is unconscious. As you might expect, things don't seem to add up. Another resident tells Aviva that her mother was typing up notes on something and she is looking for them, and then her mother's room is ransacked. Add in the niece hacker who now works for the FBI and taught the woman how to hide her files and back them up on thumb drives, the realization that the resident trying to find the notes is the same woman with a shady past with the family, and the pieces start to fall together. 

What makes this a cozy mystery worth reading isn't that there are elderly people with no family members dying with unknown causes. What makes the story is the characters. Rabbi Aviva Cohen is a no-nonsense, and not the most religious, woman. She's a strong character, yet has issues - especially with her ex-husband wanting to get back together. There is family conflict, secrets revealed among family members, and, of course, the mystery. The twists and turns as Aviva searches for answers with the occasional miss-step keep the pace steady and yield a few laughs. There isn't a lot of religion and you don't have to understand Judaism to appreciate the story. Yom Killer is the first in a series of three.

Review:

An interesting spin on the organized sleuth, Maggie uses her lists and determination to help her friend Tess get out of jail, along with her husband and friends, an unlikely immigrant Martin, three teens, dogs, and friends. Only someone set up Tess and not all is as it seems. The story moves ahead with twists and turns as the flames shift direction and illegal activities in the mountains are identified. Danger from multiple directions keeps the tension at a high level.

What I most enjoyed were the characters - unique, human, and realistic responses of the teens to the initial tragedy, as well as the dangers they encounter on the trail. Martin's story is also touching as is the community response to Patrick's death. Maggie is likable and stays the course. The police involvement - Jason and Paolo - are definitely the good guys. Ever wonder how to prepare for a disaster? Each chapter starts with tips on how to be ready and situations to consider. 

This is the fourth in the Maggie McDonald series. It's my first for the series and easily read as a stand alone. That said, I'll be adding this series to my TBR list.

Blog Tour : Interview with Annette Dashofy, Author of WITH A VENGEANCE

Today I am pleased to have Annette Dashofy as my guest to talk about writing the Zoe Chambers mystery series and WITH A VENGEANCE...

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? Do you always write in the same place or have to have specific objects or food/drink handy?

I’m afraid I’m notoriously boring in this department. I don’t have any real “quirks” but I do have a routine. I get up, shoo my husband off to work, grab a cup of coffee and some breakfast and then take my second cup of coffee into my home office where I write for two or three hours.

When writing this book what was the hardest thing about it? Easiest?

The hardest part was the research. And the easiest part was…the research! There was a lot of police procedure in WITH A VENGEANCE, and often I’d mistakenly think I knew what I was talking about! I’d write a scene the way I thought it would happen. But then I had a long chat with our local police chief who talked me through how the situation would really play out. The “easy” part was—the more accurate version was so much better! The rewriting was a blast! Later, rather than write the scene I envisioned first, I took the set-up to a cop friend of mine and said, “Okay, what would Pete do?” He gave me a long detailed account of different ways to handle it. My response was WOW. He just wrote the end of my story for me! Well, not quite, but he sure contributed a lot.

When did you first come up with the idea for the Zoe Chambers series?

Zoe and Pete first appeared in a short story in Mysterical-e back in 2006 (I think) and was a finalist for the Derringer Award of 2007. About that time, the series I’d been working on failed to find a publisher, and I wanted to start something new. A reader asked if we would ever see more of Zoe and Pete, so I thought I’d toy with fleshing them out a bit. I guess it worked!

This is book four in the series. How much have your main characters grown?

Zoe has definitely matured and overcome some obstacles in her life and in her career. After Bridges Burned, the previous book in the series, she was faced with a brand new devastating problem. I won’t say what in case you haven’t read it yet. But she continues to struggle with it in this book and will for the next couple as well. Also, her rocky romance with Pete is progressing slowly, but definitely progressing. 

How would you describe the audience who will most enjoy reading the Zoe Chambers series?

I’ve had my books compared to Julia Spencer Fleming’s and Louise Penny’s series, which I find immensely flattering. But I think if you like a good mystery with a strong sense of setting, but something not too fluffy, you’ll enjoy my series. Hank Phillippi Ryan once called them “not-quite-cozies” and I like that!

Can these be read as stand-alones or should readers start with the Book 1?

If you pick up the fourth book and read it first, you won’t be lost. But if you do start with Book 1 (Circle of Influence) and read them in order, you’ll pick up little tidbits that won’t mean anything to you otherwise.

Have you started the next in the series? What’s in store for Zoe and Pete?

Yes! I’m finishing up Book #5 in the series, which is due to my editor June first (cue hysterical screaming!), and it takes Zoe out of her comfort zone and into the wild west of New Mexico. It’s definitely a fish-out-of-water tale involving three homicides, two states, and some very hot topic issues. Don’t worry, though. Zoe comes home to Pennsylvania by the end!
Who are your favorite authors (any genre)?

This is always a dangerous question because I have so many and can’t list them all! I adore Julia Spencer Fleming, Craig Johnson, Hank Phillippi Ryan, Nancy Martin, and Margaret Maron, just to name a few. And I’m an Agatha nominee this year for Best Contemporary Novel with two of those ladies! (Squee!) And I love the other nominees (Louise Penny and Catriona McPherson), too! (Double squee!)

Synopsis
