New Release: THE ITCH OF GREED (An Izzie Di Sante Mystery Book 6) by Christa Nardi

About the Book

A dark cloud hangs over baseball season in Rosedale when star pitcher Randy Kampton is taken out of the game for good.

The DA is determined to pin the crime on Cole Rigley, a friend's brother and fellow pitcher, citing the fierce competition for a major league trade as his motive murder. Rigley's brother, asks Henry and reluctant restaurant owner Izzie Di Sante to help prove his innocence. Adding fuel to the fire, Kampton stole Rigley’s girlfriend months earlier.

While Kampton’s pitching skills are universally acknowledged, no one, not fans or teammates, has a kind word to say about him, making for a long list of suspects. Rigley, on the other hand, is respected for his talent and team spirit. The wild card is another pitcher recovering from a car accident, whose open roster spot has all three men vying for the same prize.

In Rosedale, loyalty to the minor league team runs deep, and Izzie’s digging into the players’ pasts draws resentment from fans, police, and management alike. When the team’s PR person is targeted after meeting with her, the threats become all too real. The closer Izzie gets to uncovering the truth, on and off the field, the higher the stakes, and the more dangerous the game becomes.

Read an excerpt:

An alert sounded on my phone as I entered Cenare, the Italian restaurant I owned with my sister Chloe. While Chloe was a foodie, I took care of the business side of things.

Before our parents died, I freelanced as a journalist following homicides in New York City. I was committed to the restaurant and Chloe, but my passion was murder, so I kept the homicide alerts coming. Occasionally, if one sparked my interest, I took some time to search out my next story. Homicides provided a rush the restaurant business didn’t give me.

I put my things down on the small table in the kitchen area and pulled up the message.

“Breaking news! The Rosedale Thorny Bats will be hurting this season. Their best pitcher, Randy Kampton, died under suspicious circumstances. His body was discovered by the custodians in the Thorny Bats locker room early this morning. Stay tuned for details.”

The announcement prompted me to check my other sources for unsolved homicides, although I’d never heard of the Thorny Bats or Kampton. I assumed if the man was a pitcher, the sport was baseball. It was spring and our guests or employees occasionally mentioned baseball. Growing up, Chloe and I spent most of our time in the restaurant. We lived and breathed Cenare.

My escape was writing. I knew from experience that the death of those close to you changed your life. My stories focused on the impact of a sudden death – usually a homicide – on those left behind. I found less resistance from law enforcement when I focused on cold cases or those that were stalled.

Most often, my casual interviews with those who knew the victim provided clues to the killer. Unfortunately, sometimes the killer targeted me. Having lived in New York City for five years, I was prepared for that, even in small town Pinewood, Maryland, where murders rarely happened.

With the first ever murder in our small town a few years back, I clashed with the local police detective when the immediate conclusion was a burglary, and I disagreed. For the record, I was right.

With the murder of an athlete, Kampton’s death would likely be quickly solved if the alert was any indication. Not finding anything else of note in the alerts, I went through my morning routine of checking income, paying bills, placing orders, and taking inventory. At least I used my degree in business management. I preferred taking care of those tedious tasks before anyone else arrived.

As usual, Chloe arrived with a breakfast treat as I finished the accounting and started the inventory.

“Good morning, Chloe. Those look and smell delicious.”

“Thanks, Izzie. Help yourself. I got this idea in my head and combined ingredients from an apple brownie recipe and a cinnamon streusel cupcake. Ryan assured me they were more than edible.”

With money from the estate and the restaurant, Chloe had completed her training at the culinary institute nearby. In and out of the restaurant, she often created dishes. Breakfast for me and whomever else wanted a taste tended not to be traditional Italian. For the restaurant, she kept with the family tradition and stuck to Italian dishes.

I chuckled. “I don’t know how you can cook here all day and then try out new things when you get home.”

“Well, Ryan brought some work home that he needed to get done like yesterday. Only he didn’t get the assignment until that morning.” She shrugged. “I got creative in the kitchen while he worked.”

Since she and Ryan married a few months ago, she hadn’t been as creative with her morning treats, though I could always count on her to provide my breakfast. When she took a week off for her honeymoon, I had to fend for myself, usually stopping at the local bakery on my way to work.

“It’s delicious! Not quite brownie and not quite muffin. Still very moist and I’m a sucker for cinnamon and apples. I’ll have to freeze some of these for the next time I see Henry. Now that he’s taken the detective exam and he may be working part time in Franklin, I hope to see him more often.”

Henry and I had started off as friends and our relationship moved forward from there. He was always a willing assistant and backup when I pursued a story. Helping me out prompted him to pursue his detective credentials.

“Speak of the devil.”

I showed Chloe the phone, took the container of treats, and sat down at the table.

“Hi, Henry. How are you?”

“Good. I may have a case for you and wanted to give you a heads up. Do you have a few minutes?”

I grabbed a piece of paper off the nearby printer. “Sure. What’s going on?”

“You know the guy who always gives me a hard time about driving an automatic or having a family car? Phil Rigley?”

“Dark hair, hazel eyes, not quite as tall as you, and maybe a year or two younger. A southern twang.”

“That’s him. He called this morning, wanting my opinion. His brother, Cole, plays ball with the Thorny Bats. Cole contacted Phil this morning. Something about a player dying and the police interviewing everyone. Phil didn’t have many details, but he wanted me to look into it.”

My phone pinged with an alert.

“I caught one announcement earlier and then another just came in. A custodian found Randy Kampton, a pitcher for that team, dead this morning. It was a sports broadcaster the first time, the usual police blotter the second time. Nothing else. Where did the Thorny Bats come from? Is there a new major league team in Maryland?”

“No. The Baltimore Orioles is the only major league team. The Thorny Bats is a triple-A minor league team out in Rosedale. The players are good and some eventually get picked up by a major league team. I played in college and a few of my teammates went on to the minor leagues. We lost touch but I may see if I can locate them.”

“The news I caught indicated a suspicious death. Thorny Bats is a weird name for a team though.”

“Minor league teams often have interesting names, usually related somehow to their location and often suggested by fans. Rosedale, thorns, and baseball bats – Thorny Bats. Makes perfect sense to me.”

He chuckled. “Keep me posted. If it’s a homicide, Phil thinks his brother will be a person of interest. Both Cole and Kampton are pitchers, and Kampton stole his girlfriend.”

A small town, a murder, a fraternity, a tangled web of people and politics, and lies. When Senator Marcus Thornton is killed at an engagement party in his hometown, amateur sleuth Sheridan Hendley is drawn into the investigation alongside her detective husband.

With a reputation for flip-flopping on political issues, Thornton's death sparks suspicion. Broken promises and hidden agendas lead to many undercurrents. As Sheridan delves deeper into the case, she uncovers a network of social connections and a history of infidelity that may have played a role in Thornton’s murder.

But with so many suspects and conflicting motives, can she piece together the truth? Is the killer’s motive political or personal? Or both?

Chapter 1:

The spring and summer had flown by too fast. No sooner had we survived Maddie’s senior prom and graduation, than we were shopping for what she’d need for college and now we were moving her into her dorm, Watson Hall.

Chaotic and exciting, Maddie had no trouble with the move. Brett, the protective father, still hadn’t gotten used to the idea of her living on campus, even though she was only an hour and half away.

“Brett, you know Maddie is capable and resourceful. She’ll call if there’s even a hint of a problem. Besides, Nedra will call Melina if there’s a problem and Melina will call me.”

Nedra was Maddie’s best friend and, thankfully, they’d both been accepted to the same college and were in the same dorm, though not roommates. I’d met Melina, her mother, when I married Brett, became a stepmom, and moved to Clover Hill, Virginia. Melina and I both volunteered at Pets & Paws, the local dog shelter. We’d become close friends, as had our daughters.

We were on our way home when the hands-free system alerted Brett to a call from his boss. He grunted and accepted the call.

“McMann. We need you to respond to a situation in Birchwood. ASAP.”

“Got it!”

The call disconnected. We exchanged glances and Brett opened his mouth to speak. Before he got a word out, his partner, James Fabry, called.

“Hey! You get the call? You finished up at the college?”

“Yes, and yes. He said ASAP – what’s the story?”

Fabry groaned. “All I know is that the victim is a political figure and the locals are freaking out. No one wants to even name the person. That’s odd.”

“Okay. I can be in Birchwood in about ten minutes if I drive there directly from where we are now. Sheridan is with me. If I take her back to Clover Hill first, it will take about thirty. What do you think?”

Fabry chuckled. “I think ASAP means just that. Sheridan isn’t a stranger to this stuff. Maybe she can help calm down the locals so we can figure out what the heck happened.”

Aside from being Maddie’s step-mother, and my involvement in dog rescue, I also teach psychology at a small college part-time. Years past, I practiced as a psychologist. I’m also an amateur sleuth.

“I’ll see what I can do and stay out of your way.” I shrugged, though only Brett could see me.

“I’m almost there. Did you get the full address? I only got Birchwood Country Club and Pavilion on his text.”

“You got more than I did, Fabry. Hold on, Sheridan’s checking on Waze.”

Almost immediately, my screen shifted. “Not very original. Birchwood Pavilion Road. Says we will arrive in seven minutes.”

“Six minutes, here. I’ll meet you both there.”

Fabry disconnected and I continued to search for events at the Pavilion. We passed the “Welcome to Birchwood” sign and continued to follow the app’s directions. My impression was that it was a small town, and from the size of the homes and grandeur of the landscaping, a well-off community. Like Clover Hill, there might be a less affluent section as well, but the area we passed was impressive.

“There. A sign for the country club.” As I said it, the app directed us to take the next right, and sure enough that was Birchwood Pavilion Road. Up ahead, I spotted flashing lights.

As we got closer, Brett pulled over, parked, and popped the trunk to get his State Police vest and gun. The pavilion and club house made an impressive picture. White with black trim, it was two stories and shaped like a horseshoe. The green grass and the circular drive, with a golf course in the distance, painted a beautiful picture. Peaceful and classic, aside from the emergency vehicles.

“Yeah. I parked and we’re heading toward the flashing lights.” He shook his head. Not on speaker, I only heard his side of the conversation.

 “I’ll meet you there.”

He turned to me. “Fabry will meet us at the main door. We’ll make nice with the locals and find out why they needed us here so fast.”

We walked toward the main door. As we waited for Fabry, I took in the setting. People dressed for a fancy event of some kind milled around in small groups. A cotillion came to mind, though it was late afternoon. I noticed a few of the men wore large rings that didn’t quite go with their formal attire.

I tapped Brett’s arm and tilted my head when I spotted Fabry. We met up with him and made our way through the crowd. Moving, I couldn’t catch any whole conversations. Still, I heard mention of someone named Marcus more than once.

We headed toward what I guessed was a small ballroom with one glass wall. Before we reached the door, a policeman stopped us. He fidgeted and his chin trembled.

“Sorry. You can’t go any further, sirs, ma’am.”

Brett flashed his ID as did Fabry. “Detective McMann, State Police. Someone requested our presence here. What’s the status?”

“I… I… don’t know. Let me …” He turned, face white, and talked into his mic. “State Police here at my spot.” He nodded. “Okay.” He turned to us and hesitated, his chin trembling.

“What did you find out?”

“Chief Brayson is on his way, along with Mayor Greenlief.”

Fabry coughed. “Why are all these people here?”

“Robin Greenlief and Doug Shandler. Their engagement party.”

I gasped. Two men approached us, one in a formal police uniform and one in a tuxedo. The chief and the father of the bride-to-be. Both with furrowed brows and pinched lips. As they approached, I took a step back, not too sure how they’d react to an outsider.

Brett and Fabry stood even straighter as the men exchanged names. Chief Brayson nodded his head in my direction. “And she is?”

“Sheridan Hendley. She’s a psychologist who frequently works with the police. She’s also my wife.”

Brayson didn’t quite roll his eyes, but his expression came close. Fabry interrupted.

“We’re here at your request. We understand there was an event here and there’s a victim. What happened and why the State Police?”

Mr. Greenlief, the mayor, exhaled. “My daughter’s engagement party. Lots of high-profile community members and family. Twenty-five years ago, my best friend in college…” He choked and recovered quickly. “He… he and his wife became Robin’s godparents. Today, someone killed him.”

Brayson squeezed Greenlief’s arm. “Someone killed Marcus – Senator Thornton. His wife, Molly, is in shock, as is Mary Greenlief and everyone else. Given my involvement with the Thorntons, and the Greenliefs, I recused myself immediately and requested the State Police take over the investigation.”

Brett glanced toward me and back to the Brayson. “Where are the women you just mentioned? Molly and Mary. The ones in shock? Sheridan may be able to help while we get up to speed on Thornton’s death.”

“Follow us. We’ve been with them since it happened.”

We followed the chief and the mayor. I caught the curious expressions on many faces as we entered the pavilion itself. We weren’t exactly dressed for a formal or even semi-formal affair, not even business casual. Police and what appeared to be security obstructed our view of the body at one end of the bar area. Two small groups huddled at the other end.

New Release: VENTURES, VENGEANCE & MURDER (Book 11 of the Stacie Maroni Mysteries) by Christa Nardi

ABOUT THE BOOK

A prominent child advocate’s death is only the beginning…

When a prominent doctor and outspoken advocate for child abuse victims is murdered, trauma counselor and amateur sleuth Stacie Maroni can’t help but wonder if there’s more to the tragedy than meets the eye. At the same time, whispers of financial misappropriation in programs meant to aid victims have surfaced. Both the good doctor and the suspect agencies share interest in child welfare - could the two be connected, or is it just a coincidence?

Stacie doesn’t believe in coincidence and neither does Detective O’Hare. As Stacie extends her support to the doctor’s fiancĂ©e, Megan, she uncovers hints that more is afoot than meets the eye. When anonymous threats escalate into real danger, Stacie realizes she’s stumbled onto something totally unexpected. With her own life on the line, and potentially, Megan’s, Stacie must untangle the truth before there are more victims.

Read an excerpt:

I jumped when my phone rang, then smiled. Detective Michael O’Hare and I were a couple, although his job had kept him busy the last few nights. Besides, dealing with a grumpy sick person didn’t translate to romantic evenings. He did stop and bring me chicken soup though.

“Hi, Michael. How are you?” He groaned. “Busy. You sound better. I hoped to stop by, but I may not make it.” He grunted. “We got an anonymous call directing us to Old Country Road. When Lahomes and Marina got there, they found a man, dead. Still trying to figure out who he is.”

“Oh, my.”

“I’ll catch up with you later.”

A quick check to see if anything popped up on alerts yielded no information, and I groaned when I opened my email. After being out sick both Friday and Monday with the flu, there were too many messages and each one required a response of some sort. Part of my grumpiness I blamed on allergies and a sinus infection. The rest was the day to day tedium of my job as HR Specialist at Foster’s Insurance.

I felt better, but not up to par. I scanned my email to see which would be simple and quick. My eyebrows rose when I spotted one from Lionel Smythe. He served as the chair, the overseer, and attorney for a foundation for women who were victims of domestic violence.

Set up by my late husband, Ted Noth, the foundation focused on education, services, and prevention related to domestic violence. I served as the co-chair as stipulated in Ted’s will, along with J. Colton Stewart. Ted had been Colton’s attorney dealing with theft of intellectual property at Colton’s technology corporation.

Lionel had also included Colton on this too short email. “Need to call a meeting. Let me know your availability.” That was followed by a scheduler app with dates and times for the next week. I left the app up and replied all.

“What’s the purpose of the meeting, Lionel?”

Once I hit send, I studied the scheduler. Not a morning person, I confirmed late afternoon ones. I could do morning yoga, not morning people. Done, I hit submit and moved on.  My phone pinged. It was Lionel.

“Stacie, we have a problem. Can you meet me some place? Starbucks?”

The man knew my weakness for skinny mocha latte. “Lunch? What’s up?”

“Noon. The one on Main Street. I’ll explain it when I see you.”

He disconnected. I stared at my phone like it had the answers to all my questions. A glance at the clock, and I quickly let my friends know I had other plans for lunch. Most days, Jillian, Trina, Ronnie, and I ate at the table in my office, avoiding the noisy cafeteria.

Jillian, my best friend since college, worked in contracts and made sure I ate something nutritious. Trina in IT made sure all of us stayed connected, sometimes engaging her special, albeit questionable, skills. She was the bright and colorful friend.

Ronnie was the latest addition to our group. She’d worked for my husband, Ted, when he was murdered. She left that law practice and joined us at Foster’s. With a toddler, she rarely joined us for social events. Still, she’d taken up the gauntlet to teach me to cook.

Each of my friends replied to my message with some version of “why” and I answered, “Foundation business. Later.”

Before I left, my curiosity won out and I checked for another alert. O’Hare hadn’t mentioned the cause of death. Possibly, the man had a heart attack. Or was he murdered?

As I rushed out, Rosie tsked. “Having lunch with the hunky detective?” Rosie’s my administrative assistant, an older lady who reminds me of Rosemary Clooney. She also has a crush on O’Hare.

“Afraid not, Rosie. See you after lunch.”

It was a short drive to Starbucks and I joined Lionel inside. An impressive attorney, he was short and slim, with a crewcut. As always, he wore a suit with a bowtie. We ordered and sat down.

I chuckled. “This is much better than the place with tables and chairs that looked like vegetables.” We’d met there once and the furniture distracted me. “What’s the problem?”

His hands shook and he shredded his napkin. He glanced around and leaned forward. He whispered. “Someone left a message on the foundation line. About one of the grants we awarded last year. The caller claimed the agency overspent their budget and not all for the goals of the grant.”

“Don’t they turn in quarterly reports or something?” At Foster’s Insurance, I had to run weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports.

“We do get reports with outcome data throughout the year. We have a record of how many people attended the educational sessions, for example, and their evaluation of the programs. The agency that added more trauma staff? They provided us with numbers of persons treated, whether they returned to the abuser or not, if they filed a police report, how many sessions they attended, and pre-/post- measures of self-worth, anxiety, and depression, if possible. As for budget, it’s an annual report and the year isn’t up yet.”

“I think the obvious solution is to ask for all grantees to submit a financial report. And make sure for all future grants, there is a financial report along with the outcome report quarterly. In their grant application, they indicated how the money would be spent. It shouldn’t be hard to determine if they did what was approved.”

“I know. I wanted to run it by you and Colton first. The meeting is to be sure we’re all on the same page for the next round of grants. At least one of those agencies with a grant already contacted me to see if they could get a renewal. We’ve never discussed that possibility.”

“Okay. Check in with Colton on this, but my suggestion? You email all three agencies we gave money to and ask for an itemized report of their spending to date, ASAP. You can frame it in the context of the next round of applications.”

“Thank you. I’ll check with Colton.” He leaned back. We finished lunch and I drove back to work. I chuckled as I got off the elevator and found O’Hare waiting at Rosie’s desk.

“Hi, Detective. Is there a problem?”

“I need to touch base with you. Besides I missed you.”

He leaned over and kissed me. Rosie squealed. For a long time, we’d hidden our relationship from her. That all ended when she caught him kissing me and likened it to kissing Santa Claus.

“Let’s go to my office and you can fill me in.”

AN ITCH OF SECRECY (An Izzie Di Sante Mystery #5) by Christa Nardi

Amidst the Christmas chaos, a friend's urgent plea for help places one more challenge on Izzie’s already overflowing plate.

Known for his immense wealth and his impact on private healthcare services, Carson J. Keltce’s murder had ripple effects from the small town of Blanton to Baltimore and beyond. Izzie Di Sante, a restaurant owner with a passion for investigative reporting, is pulled into the investigation when her best friend calls sobbing. Nicole was living with CJ and the police have her pegged as a person of interest. The police question Nicole's involvement, given the strained relationships CJ had with his family and the secrecy surrounding his personal life.

Even though the restaurant is crazy with the Christmas holidays and Chloe's upcoming wedding, Izzie somehow makes time to look into CJ’s murder. Her questions soon ruffle someone's feathers. With each revelation, the danger intensifies, and Izzie must stay sharp to navigate the perilous path ahead and uncover the secrets that led to CJ's tragic end.

Read an excerpt:

CHAPTER 1

Whenever I thought of my sister’s upcoming wedding amidst the holiday rush, I panicked. If ever things could go wrong in the restaurant business, this combination spelled disaster. To make it worse, Chloe, as the chef for our family restaurant, took charge of the menu for her own wedding.

As a diversion, I checked the homicide alerts for recent murders near Pinewood, Maryland, where I lived. Although the restaurant took up most of my time, Chloe and I had worked out ways for me to take time off to feed my passion for investigative reporting. I was most interested in those cases where it seemed as if the police had nabbed the most convenient suspect or they had no suspects.

One alert caught my attention. Other than the victim’s name, there was little information shared. “A shooting yesterday in Blanton, MD, resulted in the death of Carson J. Keltce, outside his home. If you have any information, please contact the Blanton PD.”

From his picture, Keltce was an attractive man, white, probably a professional from the jacket and tie. There had been only one update since the earlier post. Again, the alert shared meager information.

“Police responded to a call of a shooting and a man down. First responders pronounced Carson J. Keltce dead at the scene. Anyone with information should contact the police.”

Blanton wasn’t that far from the family restaurant, Cenare, I co-owned with Chloe. From the information I pulled up, Blanton was a small town, probably a bedroom community for some working and living in DC. The pictures showed mansions and large homes.

I’d never been to Blanton, and I avoided DC with all the tourists and traffic whenever possible. My best friend since high school, Nicole Mancini, worked in DC as a social worker. It occurred to me I hadn’t heard from her for a while. I took a deep breath, cuddled with my cat, Tira, showered, and dressed.

After more than a month back living in my childhood home, the short drive to Cenare no longer bothered me. I still kept dresses and shoes in the upstairs loft there, where I’d lived for several years. Back then, my only commute to work had been a flight of stairs.

I arrived at Cenare before Chloe, as always. I spent my early mornings working on the books and checking the status of orders. I went upstairs to the office and took care of those tasks, then headed back downstairs to start the inventory. Chloe arrived and handed me a breakfast casserole. Her breakfast treats were always a pleasant surprise.

“Thanks, Chloe. I don’t know why, but I’m hungry. Probably the cold front.”

“It’s definitely chilly out there. Great idea to put a coat rack in the side room.”

She pulled off her jacket and set it on the rack next to mine. I handed her the menu, and she opened her mouth to say something as my phone pinged. I smiled, put my hand up to Chloe, and answered.

“Hey, Nicole. How are you?”

“Izzie.” She sobbed.

“What’s wrong? Are you sick? Your parents?”

Chloe’s mouth dropped, and she froze in place.

Between sobs, I caught a few words. “CJ.” “Police.” “Dead.”

“Try to calm down. I think you’re trying to tell me something about someone named CJ, the police, and someone died. Who’s CJ?”

“He’s the person in charge at HHS – Home Health Services. The company I work for.” She gave off an anguished cry.

“Are you seeing or involved with CJ?”

“Yes. Only he’s dead, Izzie. The police came and asked me questions. Someone killed him.”

“Is his last name Keltce?”

“Yes. How did you know that?”

Chloe put her hands out and I mouthed, “Later.” She shrugged and got to work.

“I spotted the alert this morning. I’m surprised the Baltimore police sought you out already.” Nicole lived in the outskirts of DC, with most of the places she worked in the DC area.

“I wasn’t home. I was at his house. Inside when someone shot him in the driveway.”

“OMG. Nicole, did you see the shooter?”

“No. The police asked me that, too. I was in the kitchen. I heard the shots and ducked. Don’t ask me why I ducked. I did. When I heard no more noise, I looked out the front door. CJ was on the ground, flowers by his side. I called the police.”

“Was he alive then? Did he say anything?”

“I checked for a pulse. Only I couldn’t find one. I called out his name. Blood everywhere. I got sick by the hedges as the police arrived.”

She cried some more. “Before you ask, the police also asked if I knew anyone who had a beef with him. Not enough to kill him in cold blood. Some people groused about their hours and cases and pay.”

“Are you okay? Do you need to work today?” It was Tuesday and in the past, Nicole’s hours were sporadic.

“I’m due at the Medical Rehab Center at noon. On call for all trauma victims for the next twelve hours. Izzie, the police told me not to leave the area. I explained about my job. The two of them argued whether it was beyond the usual limit. Finally, the older one, Sandler, cleared me to go to work and warned they’d be checking to make sure I showed up.”

"Are you okay with going to work?”

“Yes. I think so. I need something normal. Maybe I’ll call and see if anyone can take my shift. Why would the police check on me?”

“Usually in a homicide, they always look at the people closest to the victim and in the area at the time it happened. You’re both.”

“That‘s why they wiped off my hands, right? I tried to explain the maple syrup, only they weren’t listening. Do I need an attorney, Izzie?”

“Maybe. Maybe not. If you can’t afford one and you need one, they’ll assign a public defender. In the meantime, be careful what you say to them.”

I heard the doorbell in the background.

“Izzie. I have to go. The police are back.” She disconnected.

The last time we’d talked, she’d broken up with Mickey. The only other thing I remembered were her comments about doing the work of two people and budget cuts. She’d talked of changing jobs and mentioned a change in leadership. I’d tried to convince her to look for a job closer to Pinewood. That hadn’t happened, and now a murder.

New Release: A WEEKEND GETAWAY, ANOTHER MURDER (Sheridan Hendley Mysteries #10) by Christa Nardi

About the Book

A weekend getaway leads an amateur sleuth and her detective husband down a treacherous trail.

With Maddie away on a high school trip, Sheridan and Brett are looking forward to some alone time – and a long-needed break from work and crime. To that end, they rent a cabin in the woods, planning to enjoy nature and hike the trails in the adjacent state park. But their plans are soon derailed by the appearance of a frantic dog, its owner nowhere in sight.

The insistent dog leads them to an injured couple and a lifeless body. Sheridan and Brett are quick to offer assistance, both to the injured and the local authorities. The hike was challenging enough, but the trail left by the killer is filled with twists and turns, bringing with it new threats and danger.

New Release priced at $0.99 through 9/1/2024.

Read an excerpt:

From Chapter 1:

The cabin was nicely appointed and provided a comfortable space. We dropped everything inside, put away the food stuffs, filled our water bottles, and went exploring.

“They didn’t lie about the quiet, and it’s very well kept up, both the cabin and the area. I’m impressed.”

Brett scanned the area. “Me, too. You up for trying out a trail?”

“Sure. The signage with colors reminds me of the arboretum at Cold Creek. Black would be the hardest trail, so let’s start with the blue.”

He rubbed my back. “We’ll work our way up to the black one. I’m not sure how many trails there are and which trails end in the park itself. I think they all do.”

I chuckled as I stepped over a tree root. The further into the trail we walked, the less sunlight passed through the trees. It almost seemed spooky. We paused to drink some water and decide which way to go at a fork in the path and no signage. A dog barked, startling me. I looked around, and so did Brett.

“Where are you, sweetie? Come here.” Brett shook his head and studied the trees and brush. I called again and spotted a small white dog. The dog barked and turned around.

“Wait!” I started after him and stopped. “Come here, sweetie. Let’s see if you have a tag so we can find your human.”

He came toward us, and I crouched. He barked and took off. This time he was close enough I could see his leash. I dove for it and missed, colliding with the ground. Brett helped me up, and we moved in the direction the dog disappeared.

“He has a leash. His owner may be hurt. Let’s follow him.”

I nodded. That path turned uphill and curved. Every so often, the dog came back, barked, and kept going. I heard a scratchy voice and turned to Brett. He nodded. “A woman. There’s a chance she’s hurt.”

He put on speed, and I trailed behind. The dog barked and whined as we approached a clearing. A woman laid alongside a man on the ground. The dog went to the couple and came back to us, barking and panting. I spotted what appeared to be a body further away.

“I have a gun and I know how to use it.” The woman’s voice was raspy. “I tried to call the police, but my fall smashed my phone. Michael’s unconscious.”

Brett put his hands up. “Ma’am. We’re only here because your dog led us to you. We mean you no harm. I’m a detective with the State Police. That looks like a gun someone in law enforcement might have. Are you law enforcement?”

Her shoulders relaxed a bit, she put the gun down, and her lips trembled. “It’s Michael’s gun. Michael’s a detective in Beckman Springs. Can you call for help, please?”

“I’m Sheridan. I’ll call for you. Do you know the best way to direct them here?”

“Black trail. I don’t know how else.” She leaned over the man and cringed.

“Ma’am, are you hurt? Can you tell me what happened?” Brett moved to the man to check him out. He wasn’t moving.

“I’m Stacie. We were coming up the trail from that side.” She pointed in the opposite direction we’d come from. “Jasper growled and pulled on his leash. I tried to hold him, but he got loose. Michael moved forward. I heard Jasper yelp and rushed over."

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year, hopefully with more peace, kindness, and tolerance.

As I reflect on 2023, I try to focus on the positive. For the most part, family and friends are in good health. Along with friends, my husband and I cruised to and through the first lock of the Panama Canal and later cruised Greece, Italy, and Malta. My husband and I visited family and friends in Virginia after not seeing them in 10 years. I met up with colleagues I hadn't seen in a while at conferences in Texas, and traveled to San Diego for Bouchercon. Most recently, we celebrated Thanksgiving in Nashville.

One thing, my husband and I have learned, with the passing of friends our age or younger, is that we don't want to procrastinate. I'm not a resolution maker, but we are working on our "bucket list" and planning more trips with family and friends in 2024. That includes Europe and Scandinavia, as well trips to the northeast and southeast to see friends and family.  A return trip to Nashville, both for Killer Nashville and Bouchercon, is penciled in as well.

Of course, I hope to read more, post more book reviews, write more books, and interact with readers and other authors all year long. Stay tuned!

MATCH BOX MURDER (A Merry Wrath Story)
by Leslie Langtry

It’s just another weekend camping trip for ex-CIA agent Merry Wrath and her precocious Girl Scout troop. This time the girls are learning riflery, taught by Merry’s assassin friend, Hilly (who isn’t an assassin because the CIA doesn’t have assassins because that would be illegal…but she totally is). What could go wrong?

Plenty, because the creepy camp caretaker is soon found inconveniently dead behind the rifle range. Naturally, a violent storm comes out of nowhere and strands the troop with four suspect camp staffers. The scout manual explains how to keep kids safe during storms, hiking trips and the overly-enthusiastic application of matches to start a campfire, but there’s nothing on what to do when trapped in a lodge with a murderer. Can Merry unmask the killer before she and the girls get burned?
