Book Review: DIVINE RETRIBUTION (Divine Devils #4) By R Weir

About the Book:

After the murder of a woman he cared for, his world shattered and in turmoil, Hunter Divine has gone dark, living life off the grid. Fighting the internal demons that want to drag him into the mire, Hunter quietly begins a search for answers about his childhood. A mother he loved, who died too young, and the rolling stone father who left Hunter bitter and alone.

As Hunter digs deep, he learns secrets with ties to a woman in a powerful organization, who claims to be his mother. When assassins show up with orders to kill the other members of The Divine Devils, Hunter is forced to make a choice. Either ally with this evil woman or join his friends in the great beyond. A resolution he must find on his own, with the knowledge, death awaits him with every move he makes. The search down a lethal road for salvation and Divine Retribution.

Hunter Divine: Willing to move heaven and hell in this riveting final chapter.

Review

Hunter's Divine Devils are disbanded and he's hiding out trying to find the link to the killer and some woman who claims she is his rightful mother. He avoids his previous problems with alcohol and drugs, channeling all his energy into his mission. Although disbanded, each member of the group starts poking around themselves and connecting as they gather information.

As the pieces come together, the tension builds and the pace quickens. Well-written, there are the characters to like, as well as villains, including the one who wants all the Divine Devils dead and Hunter working for her. Hard to put down with many dead or injured, yet an effective ending.

Although this is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. That said, it's always best to start at the beginning of a series, rather than the end. I'd highly recommend this book (and the series) for those who don't mind graphic scenes and who enjoy suspense, action, and a fast pace. I'm sorry the series is ending.

Book Review: WHISKEY LULLABY An Addison Holmes Mystery by Liliana Hart

 Synopsis

Addison Holmes has her hands full. Marriage changes a woman, and pregnancy hormones are no joke. But despite her promise to retire from dangerous P.I. work, she has no choice but to take this case.

Twenty years ago, her father and his partner cracked the case of their careers. But it was all a set up. They sent the wrong men to prison, and now it's time for the real culprits to tie up loose ends. Her father is dead, but his partner, who happens to be her mom's new husband, is very much alive. At least for the time being.

Discovering the truth is no easy task, but saving her father's legacy and her step-father's life is her top priority. Because family means everything.

Review

Addison is supposed to be getting married, with not such fond memories of the last time she was supposed to get married. Her BFF, Rosemarie, and FBI agent Matt Savage, aren't helping. And then there's Aunt Scarlett. The characters are likable and the twists and turns are punctuated with laugh out loud moments. I have to admit I was (am) a bit suspicious when it comes to Savage and his agenda. He needs to find someone else. This is a fun series. Although this is part of a series, the mystery is a stand alone, though many characters are old friends from previous books. Always best to start a series at the beginning. Read the others in the series? You'll enjoy this one.

Review: DEAD MAN CODE by R Weir

JARVIS MANN RETURNS IN ANOTHER SPINE TINGLING ADVENTURE!!

***DEAD MAN CODE SYNOPSIS***
Cases come and cases go, but private detective Jarvis Mann can't land an easy one these days.

The cops are unhappy Jarvis digs into a murder case they closed, uncovering a crooked tech company, hell-bent on stealing their customers' IDs and US government secrets. Soon Russian mobsters and Chinese government goons arrive to bribe, threaten, beat, and finally kill, in an attempt to stop him and safeguard their criminal enterprise. Can he protect the life of the widow who hired him to find her husband's killer? Will the founder's beautiful and sexy ex-wife provide the key he needs to crack the case, as Jarvis
slugs and shoots his way to a pulse-pounding conclusion…

Review

Jarvis is back but not without regrets from his last case and his break up with Melissa.  He agrees to look into the possible murder of a computer nerd - the police aren't thrilled as they want to close the case as a robbery gone bad. How complicated could that be? Some how, once Jarvis finds out the hard way that some Russians don't want him investigating and then the Chinese put him on notice as well, he's inclined to believe murder over robbery.

In the meantime Melissa can't forgive him, but works for the lawyers who show up to bail out the Chinese and the Russians. Then there's Jarvis' usual charm and escapades with the ladies - Lindi comes through with information to help and April is certainly vying for his attention. In the meantime, the real hot shot hacker comes through.  Action-paced, not an obvious resolution, and Jarvis all the way. If you've liked the others in the series, Weir doesn't disappoint. This can be read as a stand alone.

Author Bio:

S.D. Thames is the author of Foreclosure: A Novel, A Mighty Fortress, and other works of crime fiction exploring the dark side of the Sunshine State. Born in Dayton, Ohio while Jimmy Carter was president, S.D. grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati (with intermittent stints in the bayous of Louisiana and on the riverbanks of Indiana). In 1992, his family relocated to Florida’s gulf coast, about an hour north of Tampa, where he blossomed as a rock guitarist and all around miscreant. While trudging his way through school, he held various odd jobs, including, in no particular order, working as a pizza cook and deliveryman (though never concurrently), dishwasher, newspaper salesman, custodian, carpenter, bookstore clerk, guitar instructor, and manual laborer.

After meeting the love of his life in 1995, he matured five years in one semester and eventually enrolled at the University of Florida, where he majored in English and studied about everything from Chaucer to the Twentieth Century novel, along with a healthy dose of literary theory. After graduating, he spent a school year teaching German in high school. His life would forever change when he returned to the University of Florida to attend law school, the traditional fallback for despondent English majors. After completing his J.D., he went to work as a litigation associate at a Tampa law firm.

The ensuing seven years are a bit of a blur, but suffice it to say that, unlike the protagonist of Foreclosure, S.D. made partner the first year he was eligible, and did so without having to lie, cheat or otherwise bend the professional rules of conduct. Most days he enjoys the practice of law. He’s had the pleasure of working for a diverse array of clients, including Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies, small business owners, real estate developers, venture capitalists, nonprofit organizations, parents in Central America seeking the return of their abducted children, and deathrow inmates.

He still lives in Tampa, Florida, where he’s married to the love of his life (yes, the same one he met in 1995). They have one daughter, who is 8 years old and a more prolific writer than her dad.

Book Review: WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU (A Lauren Beck Crime Novel) by Donna Huston Murray

Synopsis
Lauren Beck’s friends, phone, home, credit and credibility are gone, severed with surgical precision by an enemy intent on framing her for murder. Is it one of the insureds she was hired to investigate? The fellow employee she upstaged? Does the daughter of her landlady and dear friend, Corinne Wilder, hate her even more than she thought? Whoever targeted her should beware. A former cop and cancer survivor knows how to fight for her life.

Review

Lauren Beck is trying to get her life back after being told she is cancer free when her friend, the person who supported her through her fight for cancer doesn't make it. That's bad enough but Corrine's daughter receives a call that accuses Lauren of killing her mother and police officers Lauren worked with before the cancer are now investigating the death and Lauren as the prime suspect.

Lauren just keeps fighting, but there has to be some mastermind behind the events that follow as her credit is affected, her bank account wiped out, and she has nowhere to turn. Fighting for survival before keeps her going despite odds against her.

The plot is well-developed with twists, turns, and complex paths that Lauren investigates. I look forward to reading more in this crime series.

Book Review: BLOOD BROTHERS by R Weir

Synopsis:

Still recovering from his last case, which brought painful injuries and heartache, Jarvis picks himself up to help family out of a dire situation. A call from his sister-in-law leads him back to where he grew up. Big brother, Flynn, has dug himself a hole he can't climb out of, one filled with lies and deceit. Jarvis lends a hand, and is soon caught between Feds and gangsters, leading to peril for all involved.

With sharp tongue, nerves of steel, and fierce determination, Jarvis comes to his brother’s reluctant assistance. But can Jarvis save him from the depths to which he has fallen without getting them all killed? Coming to terms with his life growing up, and how he became who he is, Jarvis faces his past, present and future, and confronts an evil worse than anything he’s encountered before, one that may leave Jarvis, and all those he holds dear, dead.

Review:

In this 4th installment of the Jarvis Mann series, Weir doesn't disappoint. Jarvis is personally involved and conflicted as he tries to ferret out the trouble his brother is in. He hasn't returned to his hometown in years and his memories are not of the happy kind, except for the girl who got away. When his brother is killed, it gets more personal. He calls in favors, but at what risk?

The story moves along at a good pace, the characters are well-developed. If you like a good mystery reminiscent of PI classics, you'll enjoy the latest addition to this series. Although necessary for the story, there is some sexual content and violence that may be offensive to same. Both Jarvis and his brother have some problems with infidelity. This is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone. Weir provides the necessary background from the previous book. On the other hand, reading this one first will spoil some of the fun from the first three. I've read all four and just want to know when to expect #5.
