Book Review: NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET :A Brandy Alexander Mystery #1 by Shelly Fredman

Synopsis

Meet Brandy Alexander, a young woman from South Philadelphia with a big mouth, an even bigger heart and a little problem with impulse control. It’s not her fault trouble seems to follow her around. Okay, it is her fault, but why quibble over details?

When Brandy (a puff piece reporter for a local Los Angeles TV news station) returns to her hometown after a four year absence, she is thrilled to be reunited with friends and family. But her joy is short-lived when her best friend, John, becomes the victim of a tragic accident. Brandy is alone in thinking that the death is “no accident” and as she sets out to prove her theory, she stumbles upon a political scandal of major proportions. Things begin to heat up, when it appears that her former boyfriend, police Detective Robert Anthony DiCarlo, is involved in sabotaging the investigation. The one thing Brandy knows for sure is that people keep turning up dead and if she doesn’t get some answers fast, she could end up on the short list.

As Brandy searches out the truth, she gains some unexpected allies including sexy, dangerous, street-savvy Nicholas Santiago and the now-married Bobby, who still holds a torch for his former girlfriend.

With humor, guts and determination, Brandy tackles each challenge – be it dodging a bullet or resisting that box of Tastykakes in the cupboard. Murder, mayhem and romance abound in Shelly Fredman’s novel, proving there really is No Such Thing as a Secret.

Review

Brandy is quite the character, returning home only for a best friend's wedding. She stayed away in LA, not quite getting over her break up with Bobby DiCarlo. She's a bit impulsive and immature, but kind hearted and loyal. When her good friend, John, is believed dead, her wish to become more than someone reporting on dog shows comes out. Unfortunately, she doesn't do well in scary situations. She is going to find his killer, even if it means getting help from Nick Santiago. Especially after someone comes after her with a hatchet.

This was a fun read for something light while staying at home, if not very realistic. Some might find references to certain behavior offensive. This is the first in the series, and hopefully Brandy matures a little as the series continues.

Book Review: CHRISTMAS BIZARRE: Mina Kitchen Cozy Comedy Series #2 by Lizz Lund

Synopsis (sort of) from Amazon

READERS' FAVORITE 5-STAR REVIEW !

What do Santa’s Sidekick, a dead lawyer and a geriatric vampire have in common? Meet Mina Kitchen--a forty-something single who finds trouble quicker than she can whip up a batch of breakfast breads. Plural. Her catering disorder runs neck-and-neck with her weird luck, and her cat’s weirder tendency toward gnawing elf gear. Okay, and getting kidnapped a couple of times in one week is a little strange, too.

Her next door neighbor Vito's past as ex-leader of the Moils, the Jewish-Polish Family from Bumville, New Jersey, comes to light and throws a dollop of dilemmas into an already simmering plot.

Top it all off with a counterfeiting ring, a county-wide dearth of holiday wrapping tape, and a mass of pets running loose at the local mall, and what do you have? A recipe for disaster that Mina whips to a froth.

If you're looking for funny novels for women, packed with humor, cozy animals (in the guise of pets) -- and recipes -- look no further. The second book in the hilarious Mina Kitchen Comedies, Christmas Bizarre will keep you smiling when you’re not shouting up a belly laugh. It delivers a LOL tour of Lancaster, “Pee-Ay”, where you’ll discover a lively cast of characters, funny dialogue and lots of twists and turns.

Review

This was a cute fun read, with or without the Christmas theme and elf-shoe eating cat or the sudden panic when there is no tape for wrapping the presents (duct tape, anyone?).  Mina manages, once again, to find a body and all her cooking and baking takes a while to simmer and unravel all the moving parts. It doesn't have to be the holiday season to enjoy the silliness and unique characters Lizz Lund has created.

Blog Tour and Book Review: KILL A LOT : An Ivy Meadows Mystery by Cindy Brown

About the Book
A jouster, a playwright, and a detective walk into a faire…but it’s no joke when one ends up dead.

Actress and part-time PI Ivy Meadows is thrilled when she learns that the famous playwright behind Hello Dolly Madison is in Arizona. Not so much when she realizes he’s a suspect in the murder of a Renaissance faire jouster.

As is her friend Riley. And about a thousand other people, all disguised in Renaissance costume during the fatal jousting match.

When Ivy is hired to investigate the killing, she goes undercover as a Cockney belly dancer at the faire and finagles her way into the playwright’s Kennedy-inspired version of Camelot—as Marilyn Monroe, no less.

Then, in the midst of her toughest case ever, Ivy has to solve another dilemma: Will she follow her lifelong dream of being an actor or settle down with the love of her life?

The murder investigation, the play, and real life come together in a twist that begs the question: Is there a happily-ever-after for anyone?

Review

Ivy Meadows, part time PI and would be actress is in her element and out of her element at the same time. A renaissance festival is a world all its own and a jouster has been killed, an acquaintance - Riley - accused of the murder. Then there is the illusive and quite famous Thomas Roberts accepts her bid to play Marilyn in his newest play. The hitch?  Matt has just suggested they take the next step and live together. Love or acting career? And what about Uncle Bob?

If you've ever been to a Renaissance Festival, you will be able to relate to the sights and sounds Ivy is exposed to and, as she goes undercover as a mime belly dancer, the fine distinction between bawdy and crude at the Ren. This is a fun mystery, in a unique setting, with interesting characters. To add to the mystery, it appears that Angus, the deceased, is not particularly a popular fellow - in fact, nobody seems to miss him or mourn his passing in the least.
I've been to a Ren fest and had to chuckle at Ivy's descriptions - right on. The pace is steady and the personal tension adds to the story rather than detracts. If you like a cozy mystery, this is a good one.

SYNOPSIS

How Many Do-Overs Do You Get in One Lifetime?

One crazy old lady. Two gin and tonics. Three derelict beach-bum friends. Will Val’s fourth stab at starting over add up to a big fat zero?

After being raked over the coals by her German ex, Val Fremden returns to her hometown of St. Pete Beach, Florida to find everyone and everything she knew squashed under the heels of change – including herself.

With nothing to go on but her own dry sense of humor and the life coach advice of a beer-guzzling old lady she meets at the beach, can her life sink any lower?

Starting over again won’t be easy. But Val soon discovers friends can come from unexpected places.

When a chance encounter with a drunken beach bum throws a hot cop onto her path, Val realizes there are still a few sparks left in the old girl, yet. Now, if she could only convince herself she’s still got what it takes to get him hot and bothered, too….

Glad One is a satirical look at divorce, singlehood and climbing back up the social scale, told through the eyes of a snarky, reluctant, mid-forties woman who took her chances and lost everything…but regained herself.

If you like wacky, deeply flawed characters and laugh-out-loud situations, you’ll love Glad One! It’s the first book in Margaret Lashley’s hilarious, irreverent Val Fremden Humorous Mystery Series.

REVIEW

Southern style, rednecks, down-and-out losers, a lot of sarcasm and surprisingly hope.

Val's midlife return to the US is not exactly welcoming - limited money, no friends, and no career.  She meets a woman on the beach - Glad - who offers her friendship and a life message. Only then Glad dies and the mystery unfolds around Glad's life. Val may not have a plot for her next book, but along with her new - rather unusual friends - she is determined to find answers and not let the witch get whatever inheritance may be due Glad's daughter. Tom, the cop (and sanest of the bunch) agrees to help out and what they discover is not expected. So, how many do-overs can one person have in the game of life?

Lashley has created quirky characters, yet the bonds among Glad friends, even with the dramamine, body odor, and beer, are enviable. If you like a story that has every possible twist of human interaction - the good, the bad, the ugly, the humorous - you will enjoy this book and the journey as Val finds Glad's daughter. As much women's fiction as anything else, there is a mystery to solve.  And the solution isn't necessarily expected.

This is the first of the Val Fremden Humorous Mysterious Series, I'm looking forward to reading more and it looks like there are 7 in the series...

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.

QUESTIONS FOR THE AUTHOR

Why did you decide to write women’s fiction?

I grew up in an era of strong women role models, such as Marlo Thomas in That Girl, as well as Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett in shows that bore their names. These women were pursuing their own dreams, their own ways. I didn’t see much of that in fiction today. I wanted to create a character that was strong, yet vulnerable. One that celebrated the everyday, self-made woman who was struggling to finally put her own needs first. My main character, Val, is a survivor who bears the scars of her hard journey proudly, and with her own quirky coping mechanisms and sense of humor.

Where did you get the idea for Glad One?

It’s a follow-up to Absolute Zero. A middle-aged woman who had it all, risked it all, and is now starting over with nothing. I wanted to explore the idea of a woman who returns to the US and finds everything she knew erased – including her credit history, finances, friends and social status. With no family support either, where could she turn? What would she do? What would change about her? What would she learn to value above all else?

What type of reader would enjoy your brand of women’s fiction?

Readers who like to be taken by surprise – who like to laugh and cry and dissolve into another world when they read. My characters have their great triumphs and cringe-worthy failures. They are flawed and vulnerable and funny as hell. My stories draw laughs using a wide net – from Pat Conroy’s twisted, dark family humor to Bridget Jones’s slap-stick situational gaffs. Things don’t always turn out like they planned. But that’s life – when it’s lived truly.

Book Review: A VIEW TO A CHILL - A Cherry Tucker Mystery and Maizie Albright Star Detective novella by Larissa Reinhart

Synopsis

In this Rashomon-style Christmas mystery, while Cherry Tucker suffers from flu-induced visions of murder, Maizie Albright's on the hunt for a missing granddaughter whose criminal stockings have long been filled with coal.

When Halo's most notorious artist, Cherry Tucker, thinks she sees a crime through her bedroom window, her feverish claims are ignored by her family. Trapped in bed, influenza is the least of her problems. Deputy Luke Harper can't be found. She can't tell fevered dream from reality. And a very bad Santa knows Cherry's spotted his Christmas killing. It's going to take a Christmas miracle for Cherry to recover.

Meanwhile, ex-celebrity and #WannabeDetective Maizie Albright's determined to help an elderly woman find her missing granddaughter despite her private investigator boss (and not-so-secret crush) Wyatt Nash's claims that the grandmother's annual plea is nothing but a dangerously wild goose chase. This holiday, Maizie's search takes her away from her family and Nash to Halo, Georgia, where a storm threatens her nerves and her quest. When a deviant Santa learns Maizie's looking for the granddaughter, he put Maizie on his naughty list. This Santa may get his holly jollies from murder.

Review

I'm finally catching up on the rest of the holiday mysteries and romances I purchased, and glad I didn't miss this one. Cherry Tucker is an artist and not always taken seriously anyway. When in the middle of a blizzard, feverish and delirious, it is no surprise that the locals don't take her report of a murder seriously. Her sister decides to stay with her and tries to keep her from getting any more upset. In the meantime, the ex-actress who played a detective is training to be the real thing and ends up involved as well.

A quick read, but it has laughs and reflections on life and the holidays. Cherry hates the holidays and her sister tries to decorate with not much help or enthusiasm. Well-written.  Although pulling the main characters from two series, this is easily read as a stand alone mystery.  Enjoyed it.

Review: FACIALS CAN BE FATAL (A Bad Hair Day Mystery) by Nancy J. Cohen

Synopsis:

During the frenzy of the December holidays, the last thing salon owner Marla Vail needs is a dead body slathered in a green facial mask at her new day spa. The victim, Valerie Weston, had been a major donor for Friends of Old Florida, a nonprofit historic preservation society. Marla's stylists are scheduled to work backstage at their upcoming gala fashion show, but Val's demise might put a crimp in their plans.

Hoping to salvage her reputation, Marla determines to track down the suspects. Although Val had been well liked by most people, she may have stumbled onto secrets that others would kill to keep. What are the connections between a greedy land developer, a dress designer whose husband may have links to the Asian mob, a mortician who might be involved in the human hair trade, and members of the nonprofit group's board of directors? Are the latter as dedicated to their cause as they'd like Marla to believe, or do they have their own self-interests at heart?

Sparks are sure to fly when this smart stylist joins forces with her sexy detective husband to solve a decades-old mystery that includes a secret journal, pirate tales, and shipwrecks along the Florida coast. With the rollercoaster excitement, you might need a trip to the day spa to relax.

Review:

Marla Vail has a lot going on - new family, new business venture, and a gala fashion show to prepare for - but the person who selected Marla and her business to work the fashion show dies in Marla's day spa. Marla doesn't really think the beautician who worked on Val killed her intentionally, but she needs to find out who took advantage of Val's spa experience to kill her.

With a mix of humor and light suspense, unveiled connections, and an old mystery somehow connected, the pace is maintained as Cohen adds more pieces to the puzzle.  If you enjoy humor in your cozy mystery, you'll like FACIALS CAN BE FATAL. This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a stand alone.

Blog Tour: 15 MINUTES : A Maizie Albright Star Detective Humous Mystery by Larissa Reinhart

Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Publisher: Past Perfect Press (January 24, 2017)
Paperback: 341 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0997885323
E-Book ASIN: B01N77ZK94
SYNOPSIS:

#10days #findthewoman #getthejob #doNOTfallinlove

When ex-teen star Maizie Albright returns to her Southern hometown of Black Pine, Georgia, she hoped to rid herself of Hollywood tabloid and reality show hell for a new career as a private investigator. Instead, Hollyweird follows her home. Maizie’s costar crushing, but now for her gumshoe boss. Her stage-monster mother still demands screen time. Her latest rival wants her kicked off the set, preferably back to a California prison.

By entangling herself in a missing person’s case, she must reprise her most famous role. The job will demand a performance of a lifetime. But this time, the stakes are real and may prove deadly.

“I was already a huge fan of Larissa Reinhart’s “Cherry Tucker” series, but in her new mystery series, FIFTEEN MINUTES, she had me at the end of the first line: “Donuts.” Maizie Albright is the kind of fresh, fun, and feisty “star detective” I love spending time with, a kind of Nancy Drew meets Lucy Ricardo. Move over, Janet Evanovich. Reinhart is my new “star mystery writer!” — Penny Warner, Author of DEATH OF A CHOCOLATE CHEATER and THE CODE BUSTERS CLUB

“Hollywood glitz meets backwoods grit in this fast-paced ride on D-list
celeb Maizie Albright’s waning star—even as it’s reborn in a spectacular
collision with her nightmarish stage mother, her
deer-pee-scented-apparel-inventing daddy…and a murderer. Sassy, sexy, and
fun, 15 Minutes is hours of enjoyment—and a wonderful start to a fun new
series from the charmingly Southern-fried Reinhart.”
— Phoebe Fox, author of THE BREAKUP DOCTOR series

“Larissa Reinhart’s newest heroine, Maizie Albright, is at once naïve and worldly. As a former child star, she craves life in the real world by becoming a PI, just like the TV character that made her famous. Armed with humor, charm, and stubborn determination, Maizie is a breath of fresh air. I adored every second of 15 Minutes. Viva la Maizie!” — Terri L. Austin, bestselling author of the ROSE STRICKLAND MYSTERIES and the NULL FOR HIRE series.

REVIEW:

A new series, 15 MINUTES features a Hollywood Starlit who tries to escape her agent/mother who knows no boundaries by returning home to her all-natural home grown conservative father. Maizie is there by court order and has a limited number of days to become employed.  She played the role of a teen detective in Hollywood, got a degree in criminology, so the obvious job is working for the local PI.

Needless to say, Maizie isn't ready for prime time PI work and the PI she wants to work for isn't exactly thrilled. Things get dicey with many twists and turns and embarrassing (for Maizie) situations.  This was a fun read - Maizie is definitely unique. I've enjoyed the "Cherry Tucker" series, and look forward to watching Maizie's growth and future exploits.
