Book Review: INHERITANCE Book 1 by Nora Roberts

About the Book

Inheritance is the first in The Lost Bride Trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—a tale of tragedies, loves found and lost, and a family haunted for generations.

1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…

Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.

Trey, the young lawyer who greets her at the sprawling clifftop manor, notes Sonya’s unease—and acknowledges that yes, the place is haunted…but just a little. Sure enough, Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as “the first lost bride.”

It’s becoming clear that Sonya has inherited far more than a house. She has inherited a centuries-old curse, and a puzzle to be solved if there is any hope of breaking it…

Review

Sonya quickly finds herself loving the manor, haunted or not. She imagines living there much longer than the 3 months stipulated in the will. Only to do that, she has to convince her artistic friend, Cleo who being from New Orleans believes in the supernatural and curses. Clearly a curse is in place for seven brides destined to live in the manor have all died on their wedding day.

Not surprisingly, this tale is well-written with a combination of humor and wit, along with the witchy woman who has stolen all the brides' wedding bands, and suspense. In order to break the curse, Sonya needs to find all seven rings. As she and Cleo, along with Trey and his friend go through various room, set up the studio for Cleo where Uncle Collin had his studio, they discover paintings by Sonya's father. Even Sonya's mother is impressed by the manor and the paintings. Now, all that's left is finding the rest of the rings.

Although I am not usually drawn to the paranormal, the presentation of the ghosts, down to the little boy who plays catch with Sonya's dog, is well done. Now to move onto books 2 and 3 to find out how it ends! Yes, it is a cliffhanger.

Book Review: EXPOSING LETHAL SECRETS (Jameson Investigation Series Book 3) by Deena Alexander

by Deena Alexander
Inspirational Romantic Suspense 3rd in Series
Setting – California desert and Florida forest
Publisher ‏ : ‎ Love Inspired Suspense
Publication date ‏ : ‎ July 1, 2025
Print length ‏ : ‎ 208 pages

About the Book

This bodyguard and his K-9 will do anything to uncover the truth.

Stumbling upon a burning car and rescuing an injured woman wasn’t on bodyguard Caleb Miller’s vacation itinerary—nor were the gunmen who open fire on them. But Olivia Delaney has no memory of who she is or how she got there, only that she is under threat.
Vowing to protect the woman in danger, Caleb and his K-9 go on the run with Olivia. As they work to stay a step ahead of her pursuers, they must untangle her past together…before her family’s deadly schemes bury them both.

From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.

Review

Caleb took time off to deal with some issues and now he's thrust in the middle of something that neither he nor the woman he rescued understand. He calls on the group he works with and they help him out. Gradually Olivia remembers bits and pieces, leading to the whole story. And what a story.

The story is interesting and the unfolding is well-paced. Olivia is both a strong woman and has her own baggage to deal with. Alexander did a great job of developing both these characters. I cheered them on as they both fought their demons and the bad guys.

This is the third in the series, but the first one I've read. It was easily read a standalone. It is marketed as "inspirational" and there are references to G-d, yet not overdone.

Book Review: AN INHERITANCE TO DIE FOR (Magnolia Manor Mysteries) by Joy Patrick

About the Book

Solving crimes at a crusty old Florida inn was NOT in Lilly’s 5 yr plan.

But when she discovers she is the executor of a forgotten stepfather’s will and is gifted Magnolia Manor, things get a little off track.
Lilly heads south to finalize the estate, planning to quickly return to her busy life in D.C. But the quaint, sleepy town has a strange appeal. Locals wave to you on the street. What a difference from the frenetic pace and backstabbing politics of her normal life.

But no sooner than finding the estate lawyer’s office, the laid-back vibe starts to evaporate.

An evasive legal assistant and surly Chief of Police try to shuffle her out of town. Estate files come up missing. The lawyer is surprised anyone would want to stay here...after what happened.

The town coroner reports her stepfather died of natural causes, but Lilly is not convinced. Poking around, she starts to suspect murder.

Lilly now realizes the Magnolia Manor of her fond childhood memories may be a crime scene. And that sticking your nose into small town secrets comes with a price.

This inn should’ve come with a danger sign: enter at your own risk.

Review

Lilly is successful at what she does, keeping her boss out of trouble along with Eric, the man she's been seeing. Only Eric wants to get married and she has bad feelings about marriage.
The same day she finds herself executor for one of her mother's many ex-husbands, her mother shows up in D.C., getting another divorce. Having fond memories of Magnolia Manor and needing to deal with the legal documents, she travels to Florida.

Memories come flashing back as she walks through the inn, even though it's in bad shape. Then things take a turn for the worse except for Quigly (Pete to his friends) but he insists he's just driving her around. She's sure there is something shady going on and she doesn't like the plan to demolish the inn. The inn is broken into with things broken and vandalized. Then the estate lawyer's assistant is killed.

This is a well-written story and Lilly's character is well-developed as are the other major characters, especially the sheriff. The pace is even and there is plenty of action to keep the reader engaged and wondering what will happen next. Everything leads up to an ending reflecting the nostalgia Lilly's felt since she returned to Magnolia Manor.  And, yes, Lilly's five-year plan definitely changes. This is the first in the Magnolia Manor series and a great start to a 14-book series (at least as of this posting).

Book Review: NEW YEAR NUISANCE (Holiday Cozy Mystery Book 4) by Tonya Kappes

About the Book

A sparkling New Year’s Eve cozy mystery brimming with festive charm, delightful twists, and a killer secret!

New Year’s Eve in Holiday Junction is always magical, with its annual Sparkle Ball lighting up the night and the Merry Maker spreading joy to residents and visitors alike. But this year’s celebration turns dark when notorious troublemaker Hillary Stevens is discovered murdered in the holiday town’s enchanting mini-village.

For Violet Rhinehammer, local journalist and secret Merry Maker, solving the mystery is more than a story—it’s a mission. But as Violet digs into the secrets surrounding Hillary’s untimely death, she must also juggle the arrival of her best friend, Mae West, who can never learn Violet’s hidden identity.

With a town full of suspects, buried secrets, and mounting tension, Violet races to uncover the truth before the killer strikes again. Can she protect her Merry Maker identity while unraveling the mystery, or will this New Year’s Eve end in disaster?

Review

It’s that week between Christmas and New Year’s and the Merry Maker needs to shift gears from Christmas to the Sparkle Ball to ring in the new year in Holiday Junction. Part of the celebration is the town’s mini-village with different townsfolk adding to the village – though some think it should be the same every year. Violet Rhinehammer is somewhat new to Holiday Junction and somehow was chosen to be the Merry Marker, but no one can know.

As Violet sneaks out to set up everything, a woman is killed and left in the mini-village. Along with her friend, Mae West, who has come to visit, she sets out to solve the murder. This was a fun read – even out-of-season. The story is well-written and well paced, with humor (mostly at Violet’s expense). The characters are well developed and Kappes kept me guessing until the end.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of Holiday Junction. This is a cross-over with Mae West a main character in Kappes' Campers and Criminals series, but you don't need to have read that series to enjoy this one.

Book Review: A WIDOW AT WAR by John Anthony Miller

About the Book

SHE’S A NOVICE IN A WORLD WHERE EXPERTS DIE QUICKLY.

Normandy, 1943: Ginny Drake, tasked with evacuating Nazi collaborator Claude Duvall from France, is murdered during a London briefing. British Intelligence needs a quick replacement, someone identical in appearance and fluent in French. Janelle Wilson, a war widow born in France, accepts the assignment, sparing her identical twin. She must convince Duvall that she is Ginny Drake—or he’ll refuse to cooperate.

While Inspector Charley Abbott investigates Ginny Drake’s murder, Janelle Wilson arrives in Normandy. She partners with radio operator Adrien Picard, who not only helps her elude the Germans but proves she can love again—even after losing her husband.

After a second British operative is murdered, Inspector Abbott suspects a double agent buried in the bowels of British Intelligence. Others fear a traitor in France—prepared to betray Janelle Wilson.

Janelle forges forward. Stumbling from one disaster to the next, she’s a novice in a world where experts die quickly. But she never gives up. She only tries harder.

Adrien is the only one she can trust—until the double agent is named.

Review

As the Nazi's moved further into France, everyone was tense. With one of their best operatives killed before she could tell anyone of her concerns, British Intelligence and Charley are looking for answers. More importantly, there's a package that only Ginny could deliver, and she's the second operative to be killed and previous cell dismantled. Charley spots a picture of Janelle Wilson, now a widow, and her twin sister - he's sure Janelle can pass for Ginny. Maybe Duvall never really met her. Then there's the fear that what Ginny was going to reveal was the name of a double agent. His assistant, Rita, warns him that Janelle could get killed. Still, after 5 days of intense training, Janelle parachutes into France and is almost caught by the Germans.

The story is well-written, switching frequently between what's happening in Britain and what's happening with Janelle, the "package," and Germans preparing to take Normandy. The characters are portrayed with very human emotions, though not all on the up-and-up. The pace is good and kept me engaged and I never guessed the double agent. I'm a fan of WWII fiction and this one didn't disappoint.

Chapter 1:

The spring and summer had flown by too fast. No sooner had we survived Maddie’s senior prom and graduation, than we were shopping for what she’d need for college and now we were moving her into her dorm, Watson Hall.

Chaotic and exciting, Maddie had no trouble with the move. Brett, the protective father, still hadn’t gotten used to the idea of her living on campus, even though she was only an hour and half away.

“Brett, you know Maddie is capable and resourceful. She’ll call if there’s even a hint of a problem. Besides, Nedra will call Melina if there’s a problem and Melina will call me.”

Nedra was Maddie’s best friend and, thankfully, they’d both been accepted to the same college and were in the same dorm, though not roommates. I’d met Melina, her mother, when I married Brett, became a stepmom, and moved to Clover Hill, Virginia. Melina and I both volunteered at Pets & Paws, the local dog shelter. We’d become close friends, as had our daughters.

We were on our way home when the hands-free system alerted Brett to a call from his boss. He grunted and accepted the call.

“McMann. We need you to respond to a situation in Birchwood. ASAP.”

“Got it!”

The call disconnected. We exchanged glances and Brett opened his mouth to speak. Before he got a word out, his partner, James Fabry, called.

“Hey! You get the call? You finished up at the college?”

“Yes, and yes. He said ASAP – what’s the story?”

Fabry groaned. “All I know is that the victim is a political figure and the locals are freaking out. No one wants to even name the person. That’s odd.”

“Okay. I can be in Birchwood in about ten minutes if I drive there directly from where we are now. Sheridan is with me. If I take her back to Clover Hill first, it will take about thirty. What do you think?”

Fabry chuckled. “I think ASAP means just that. Sheridan isn’t a stranger to this stuff. Maybe she can help calm down the locals so we can figure out what the heck happened.”

Aside from being Maddie’s step-mother, and my involvement in dog rescue, I also teach psychology at a small college part-time. Years past, I practiced as a psychologist. I’m also an amateur sleuth.

“I’ll see what I can do and stay out of your way.” I shrugged, though only Brett could see me.

“I’m almost there. Did you get the full address? I only got Birchwood Country Club and Pavilion on his text.”

“You got more than I did, Fabry. Hold on, Sheridan’s checking on Waze.”

Almost immediately, my screen shifted. “Not very original. Birchwood Pavilion Road. Says we will arrive in seven minutes.”

“Six minutes, here. I’ll meet you both there.”

Fabry disconnected and I continued to search for events at the Pavilion. We passed the “Welcome to Birchwood” sign and continued to follow the app’s directions. My impression was that it was a small town, and from the size of the homes and grandeur of the landscaping, a well-off community. Like Clover Hill, there might be a less affluent section as well, but the area we passed was impressive.

“There. A sign for the country club.” As I said it, the app directed us to take the next right, and sure enough that was Birchwood Pavilion Road. Up ahead, I spotted flashing lights.

As we got closer, Brett pulled over, parked, and popped the trunk to get his State Police vest and gun. The pavilion and club house made an impressive picture. White with black trim, it was two stories and shaped like a horseshoe. The green grass and the circular drive, with a golf course in the distance, painted a beautiful picture. Peaceful and classic, aside from the emergency vehicles.

“Yeah. I parked and we’re heading toward the flashing lights.” He shook his head. Not on speaker, I only heard his side of the conversation.

 “I’ll meet you there.”

He turned to me. “Fabry will meet us at the main door. We’ll make nice with the locals and find out why they needed us here so fast.”

We walked toward the main door. As we waited for Fabry, I took in the setting. People dressed for a fancy event of some kind milled around in small groups. A cotillion came to mind, though it was late afternoon. I noticed a few of the men wore large rings that didn’t quite go with their formal attire.

I tapped Brett’s arm and tilted my head when I spotted Fabry. We met up with him and made our way through the crowd. Moving, I couldn’t catch any whole conversations. Still, I heard mention of someone named Marcus more than once.

We headed toward what I guessed was a small ballroom with one glass wall. Before we reached the door, a policeman stopped us. He fidgeted and his chin trembled.

“Sorry. You can’t go any further, sirs, ma’am.”

Brett flashed his ID as did Fabry. “Detective McMann, State Police. Someone requested our presence here. What’s the status?”

“I… I… don’t know. Let me …” He turned, face white, and talked into his mic. “State Police here at my spot.” He nodded. “Okay.” He turned to us and hesitated, his chin trembling.

“What did you find out?”

“Chief Brayson is on his way, along with Mayor Greenlief.”

Fabry coughed. “Why are all these people here?”

“Robin Greenlief and Doug Shandler. Their engagement party.”

I gasped. Two men approached us, one in a formal police uniform and one in a tuxedo. The chief and the father of the bride-to-be. Both with furrowed brows and pinched lips. As they approached, I took a step back, not too sure how they’d react to an outsider.

Brett and Fabry stood even straighter as the men exchanged names. Chief Brayson nodded his head in my direction. “And she is?”

“Sheridan Hendley. She’s a psychologist who frequently works with the police. She’s also my wife.”

Brayson didn’t quite roll his eyes, but his expression came close. Fabry interrupted.

“We’re here at your request. We understand there was an event here and there’s a victim. What happened and why the State Police?”

Mr. Greenlief, the mayor, exhaled. “My daughter’s engagement party. Lots of high-profile community members and family. Twenty-five years ago, my best friend in college…” He choked and recovered quickly. “He… he and his wife became Robin’s godparents. Today, someone killed him.”

Brayson squeezed Greenlief’s arm. “Someone killed Marcus – Senator Thornton. His wife, Molly, is in shock, as is Mary Greenlief and everyone else. Given my involvement with the Thorntons, and the Greenliefs, I recused myself immediately and requested the State Police take over the investigation.”

Brett glanced toward me and back to the Brayson. “Where are the women you just mentioned? Molly and Mary. The ones in shock? Sheridan may be able to help while we get up to speed on Thornton’s death.”

“Follow us. We’ve been with them since it happened.”

We followed the chief and the mayor. I caught the curious expressions on many faces as we entered the pavilion itself. We weren’t exactly dressed for a formal or even semi-formal affair, not even business casual. Police and what appeared to be security obstructed our view of the body at one end of the bar area. Two small groups huddled at the other end.

MEMORIAL DAY : Remembering Those Who Gave Their All

I never met my Uncle Phil - he was killed in action in WWII. My husband and I watched the Apple TV miniseries, Masters of the Air, based on a book by same name. It follows the 100th Bomb Group, a unit of B-17 Flying Fortress bombers... It documented the large numbers of men who took off and never returned.  Another movie, Greyhound, also produced by Tom Hanks, focuses on the navy convey. I haven't see that one. There are several others available. From what I could find, 407,316 US military members were KIA in WWII. That doesn't count the many who survived and dealt with PTSD.

Having come of age in the era of Vietnam, within a year after I graduated from high school, some of my fellow graduates were KIA and I remember wearing wristbands for those MIA. According to Wikipedia, 58,220 members of the US military were KIA. While those who served in WWII, Korea, and so on, the Vets who made it home from Vietnam were treated poorly.

Whatever you choose to do today, take time to remember and be thankful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and democracy.
