Blog Tour: SEND IN THE CLOWNS : Country Club Murders Humorous Mystery Series by Julie Mulhern

Cozy Mystery

4th in Series

Publisher: Henery Press (October 25, 2016)
Paperback: 246 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635110814
E-Book ASIN: B01J499OUE
Synopsis

Haunted houses are scary enough without knife-wielding clowns. Especially murderous knife-wielding clowns. So thinks Ellison Russell, single mother, artist, and reluctant sleuth.

Now death wears a red nose and Ellison is up to the blood-stained collar of her new trench coat in costumes, caffeine, and possible killers. Who stabbed Brooks Harney? And why? Money? Jealousy? Drugs?

With Mother meddling, her father furious, and her date dragged downtown for questioning, turns out Ellison’s only confidante is Mr. Coffee.
Review

Ellison doesn't have much trust for men, except Mr. Coffee! She's having enough of a hard time raising a teenager on her own, but her mother thinks she needs a man, and has the just the right one! When her daughter is late and no one knows where she is she storms through the haunted house only to witness Brooks being killed.  On top of that he mumbles her name and a message.  Now she has the police, her mother, and the perfect man, all asking how she's involved.

This was a fun read, and Ellison's romance and conversations with Mr. Coffee add to the humor. The story line includes enough subplots and twists to keep me guessing and reading to the end.  I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't read others in the series - it can be read as a stand alone.  Anyone who has read the others, I'm sure will find this one just as enjoyable.

Blog Tour: BODY ON THE BAYOU : A Cajun Country Mystery Book 2 by Ellen Byron

2nd in Series
Genre – Cozy Mystery
Series: A Cajun Country Mystery (Book 2)
Hardcover: 320 pages
Publisher: Crooked Lane Books (September 13, 2016)
ISBN-13: 978-1629537689
E-Book – ASIN: B01H082DPY
Synopsis:

The Crozats feared that past murders at Crozat Plantation B&B might spell the death of their beloved estate, but they’ve managed to survive the scandal. Now there’s a très bigger story in Pelican, Louisiana: the upcoming nuptials between Maggie Crozat’s nemesis, Police Chief Rufus Durand, and her co-worker, Vanessa Fleer.

When everyone else refuses the job of being Vanessa’s Maid of Honor, Maggie reluctantly takes up the title and finds herself tasked with a long list of duties–the most important of which is entertaining Vanessa’s cousin, Ginger Fleer-Starke. But just days before the wedding, Ginger’s lifeless body is found on the bayou and the Pelican PD, as well as the Crozats, have another murder mystery on their hands.

There’s a gumbo-potful of suspects, including an ex-Marine with PTSD, an annoying local newspaper reporter, and Vanessa’s own sparkplug of a mother. But when it looks like the investigation is zeroing in on Vanessa as the prime suspect, Maggie reluctantly adds keeping the bride-to-be out of jail to her list of Maid of Honor responsibilities in Body on the Bayou.

Review:

This was not a tale of your typical pre-wedding jitters although Van and her mother could be up for the bridezilla award even before the Ginger's body is found.  There are a lot of quirky characters and hostilities abound - family feuds and the stand-in for Rufus just for a few. Add in puppies and kitties, and and old run down plantation home. Many twists and turns and suspects.

The story moved along nicely and held my interest. I liked Maggie and Bo, but my favorite character was Xander. If you like Louisiana bayou as a setting and a little romance with your mystery, you'll enjoy Body on the BayouI didn't read the first in the series - Plantation Shudders - and this can easily be read as a stand alone.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.

About The Author:

Ellen’s debut novel, PLANTATION SHUDDERS: A Cajun Country Mystery, has been nominated for an Agatha Best First Novel award, a Lefty for Best Humorous Mystery, and a Daphne Award for Best Mainstream Mystery. The second Cajun Country Mystery, BODY ON THE BAYOU, will be available in September 2016. Ellen’s TV credits include Wings and Just Shoot Me; she’s written over 200 magazine articles; her published plays include the award-winning Graceland and Asleep on the Wind. Ellen Byron is a native New Yorker who lives in Los Angeles and attributes her fascination with Louisiana to her college years at New Orleans’ Tulane University.

MY GRANDFATHER'S PANTS by Tegon Maus

Today's post is a bit out of the ordinary...  not a mystery at all, but a romantic comedy...

Publisher: Tirgearr Publishing (Jan† 21, 2014)
Category: Contemporary Romance, Humor, Romantic Comedy, Suspense
Tour Dates: Oct/Nov, 2016
ASIN: †B00HZH5A7O Available in: ebook, †164 Pages
My Grandfather's Pants

Jack Laskin is an ordinary man. More than ordinary according to some. Running the family hardware store and a life that would bore a snail, nothing exciting ever seems to happen to him. Then, at his mother's urging, he tries on a pair of his late grandfather's old pants and everything changes -- most importantly his emerging love life. It's not long before his mother and her meddling friends get involved. When an old friend of his grandfather's tells Jack he has something she wants, his new-found life takes another turn. Having no idea what he is supposed to have, Jack looks to his girlfriend, Connie, and her brother, Robert, for help. In the end, the answers will all be found in his 'Grandfather's Pants'.

Praise for My Grandfather's Pants

by Tegon Maus

"This story is fantastic! It is totally different to anything I have read before. As the storyline unfolds, it is sexy, humorous and very entertaining and absolutely brilliant!"- Susan Keefe, Book Reviews By Susan Keefe, Author

"I was definitely not expecting to laugh as often as I did while reading My Grandfather's Pants. Mr. Maus has a fantastic sense of humour that translates extremely well to the written word. He is adept at teasing out the funny side of even the most serious or mundane parts of daily life. It was especially entertaining to see how he plays around with a wide range of assumptions most of us make about certain groups of people in order to keep his readers on their toes. My Grandfather's Pants is a great choice for anyone in the mood for something quirky and original. This is the kind of book that begs to be read more than once. I, for one, will be revisiting it quite soon!"- LAS Reviewer, Long and Short Reviews

"My Grandfather's Pants is a funny and surprising novel. An enjoyable combination of fantasy and suspense with a touch of romance. The protagonist, Jack is a likable old soul thrown into a bizarre situation, and the way he handles the bizarre challenges he faces will keep you guessing . . . and laughing. Pick up this book if you want to take a ride on a saucy, madcap rollercoaster. You won't be disappointed!"- Joseph N. Sidari, Amazon Reviewer

Review

Jack owns a hardware store, passed down from his grandfather to his father, and now to him. He has a girlfriend - Connie.  They dated in high school and then went their separate ways and are now finding each other again.  Jack's normal existence is changed when he puts on his "grandfather's pants" and suddenly discovers things about his family he never knew or dreamed of, and isn't too sure about it all.  Bizarre situations abound.

This is not your typical romantic comedy, and the blackmail aspect adds a bit of mystery. The characters - from Jack to Olivia and Harriet - not to mention the other young ladies - all have interesting personalities. Not quite believable, but certainly original and creative, an interesting read. Feeling adventurous? Give it a try. A note of caution though - some of the situations may be offensive to some more conservative readers.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review as part of this blog tour. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.

About Tegon Maus

Tegon Maus was raised pretty much the same as everyone else - devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends he could conjure. Not that he wasn't friendly, he just wasn't people orientated. Maybe he lived in his head way more than he should have, maybe not. He liked machines more than people, at least he did until I met his wife. The first thing he can remember writing was for her. For the life of him he can't remember what it was about something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married him shortly after that. He spent a good number of years chasing other dreams before he got back to writing. It wasn't a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. His wife and himself had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. Be as detailed as you can, we were told. He was thrilled. If there is one thing he enjoys it's making people believe him and he likes to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn't be sure if it were true or not. When he writes, he always write with the effort of "it could happen" very much in mind and nothing, he guarantees you, nothing, makes him happier. He has consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and has been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.

Guest Post: RICHARD HOUSTON, Bestselling Author of the Books to Die For series

Today, it's my pleasure to have Richard Houston as my guest, talking about his career as an Indie author...

How to Become an Overnight Success in Only 30 Years

I know, that title is somewhat a clichĂ©, but it did get your attention or you wouldn’t be reading this, so if you’re still with me, I’ll tell you how I got my fifteen minutes of fame.

As one of the million independent authors on Amazon, I always dreamed of the day I’d see my book on the NY Times best seller list, instead of being number 500,000 on Amazon’s list. I wish I could say that day finally happened, but I did come close and made it to the USA Today’s best seller list. However great that might sound to a struggling author, trying to write that Great American Novel, I have a confession. I didn’t get there by penning the greatest mystery ever. Not even the second best mystery. No, I’ll never be another Poe, or even a Patterson, but I may give P.T. Barnum a run for his title.

What I’m trying to say is my success comes down to one simple word. Marketing. Of course, I like to think writing a good story helped, but face it folks, people can’t buy your great manuscript if they never heard of it. “Okay,” you ask, “what did you do, Richard, to get your book in front of so many people?” Well, stay with me and I’ll tell you.

First you have to have a product to sell, and it helps if you have a quality product. In books, this means a decent story, well written, with few, if any, grammatical errors. As an independent author I learned these rules the hard way. My first books have the reviews to show it. So, hire a good editor (I used Elise Abram), and then get a bunch of eyes to beta read your book. Once you’re happy with the product, find a good cover designer. I can’t stress this point enough, so I’ll say it again. Hire a good cover designer. I used a gal whose been on the USA Times best seller list several times. Her name is Victorine Lieske.

Okay, now that you have a killer cover, one that will stand out among the other six million books on Amazon, what’s next? Why you have to sell it of course. Did I mention marketing?

There was a time marketing a book meant sitting at a table in a bookstore, library, or book fair and talking to the occasional passerby. With luck, you might sell a couple copies. Or, if you were better known, a few dozen copies. Pilgrim, that won’t cut the ice today. If you want to hit those best seller lists, you need to sell thousands of copies. Which is what I did using paid internet ads. Sure, there are authors who get those great numbers without a lot of advertising. They spend years gathering email lists, Tweeting, blogging, and sending out newsletters. Eventually they get enough followers that they don’t have to advertise very often, if at all. And of course, there are at least a hundred other ways to get those coveted readers to your side, but they all take time – years in some cases – and if you’re like me, you don’t have that kind of time. My solution, and my only solution, is to spend the money on those ads.

Well, that’s it in a clamshell. Or is it? Oh yeah, I forgot to say where to advertise. In case you’ve been trapped in a giant clamshell there really is only one place to get a huge return. That of course is BookBub. However, Bookbub isn’t an easy nut to crack, err, I mean clam (we can’t have mixed metaphors, can we?). So I’ve added a couple links to some really cool places courtesy of Dave Chesson, James Calbraith, and Rachelle Ayala.

Book Review: THE BOOK CLUB MURDERS by Leslie Nagel

Synopsis

Charley Carpenter has poured heart and soul into her clothing store, Old Hat Vintage Fashions. She’ll do anything to make it a success—even join the stuffy Agathas Book Club in order to cultivate customers among the wealthy elite of Oakwood, Ohio.

Although mixing with the most influential women in town has its advantages, Charley finds the endless gossip a high price to pay. But after two women with close ties to the Agathas are brutally murdered, everyone falls under threat—and suspicion. When key evidence indicates that both murders are the work of the same hand, Charley realizes that the killer has arranged each corpse in perfect imitation of crime scenes from the Club’s murder mystery reading list. She uses her membership in the Club to convince Detective Marcus Trenault to use her as an inside informant. Not that he could stop her anyway.

Intelligent, fearless, and every bit as stubborn as Marc is, Charley soon learns the Agathas aren’t the only ones with secrets to protect. Passions explode as she and Marc must race against time to prevent another murder. And if Charley’s not careful, she may find herself becoming the killer’s next plot twist.

Review

This was a quick-paced mystery with lots of personalities and red herrings.  The Agatha's of course read mysteries and talk about murder, but now there is a murder and it somehow seems connected to the Book Club.  Now the members of the Agatha's, other than Charley and her BFF Frankie, are not your typical members, but prominent in society and not the nicest of folks.  As the story unwinds and the Agathas keep being implicated, Charley uncovers the seamy underside of her fellow Agatha readers.  Throw in the maybe romance of Marc and Charley, her friend Dmitri, and, well, this book has it all.  Including a steamy scene or two. Once the story got going, I didn't want to put the book down. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to wait until next April (2017) for the next in The Oakwood Mystery Series.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review as part of this blog tour. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.

Spotlight: THE DEADLY ART OF DECEPTION: A Caribou King Mystery by Linda Crowder

Blurb:

Only two seasons matter in Coho Bay, Alaska - cruise ship and winter. Caribou King, owner of The Broken Antler Gallery, is hip-deep in tourists when her old college pal Taylor shows up asking for refuge, saying she has no place else to go. Cara is cautious; Taylor was the wife of one of Alaska's most renowned artists––Jonathan Snow, who was mauled to death by a bear the previous year. Why would his widow want to return to the location of her tragic loss? Something about Taylor's story just doesn't ring true.

Of course, she may not be the only liar in town. Taylor's former father-in-law accuses her of killing his son in front of a diner full of people, except he may have had a stronger motive. A handsome boat captain seems to fancy both Cara and Taylor but he can't make up his mind between them ––or between lying and telling the truth. The local constable mistrusts everyone, but may have a reason to be mistrusted himself. Will Cara help her old friend Taylor, or will doing so get her into a heap of trouble? When a headless body is discovered in the bay, Cara wonders just who she can trust in this tiny town.

Lethal Lifestyles (A Headlines in High Heels Mystery)
Henery Press (September 27, 2016)
Paperback: 262 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635110654
E-Book ASIN: B01HOS85XE
Synopsis

Wedding bells are ringing at the Richmond Telegraph, and maid of honor Nichelle Clarke is determined to give her friends the perfect fairytale beginning to their happily ever after. So when a corpse crashes rehearsal weekend, Nichelle ditches her wedding coordinator shoes for her crime reporter ones, and a little poking around turns up a big problem: the victim and the groom have a history, and it’s not a pretty one.

Evidence against groom Grant Parker piles up, leaving Nichelle wishing a hostile bridesmaid was still her biggest worry as she tries to fend off Richmond’s favorite TV reporter—and her own scheming publisher. At odds with the cops, her beloved editor, and the ticking clock, Nichelle races to uncover the truth and save the day before this perfect wedding turns into a funeral.

Review

Nichelle has taken care of all the details for the perfect rehearsal weekend and wedding at this beautiful setting. Before it all gets started though Hulk finds a body and Nichelle overhears conversations that have her wondering what else is going on. All the evidence points to Grant Parker; even Bob is sure Parker is guilty. Nicelle works hard to keep ahead of her arch rival (and keep her job) while not putting Grant in the story.

In the meantime, Joey keeps telling her to be careful with hints of mafia involvement surrounding Sammons and the Generals baseball team.  The romance between them, Joey's connections, and his concern for her safety is a subplot, along with Nichelle's relationship with her ex-boyfriend. Nichelle is a great character.

The story is well-plotted and well-paced. There is always something going on - if not directly related to Burke's murder, there is a tie in somewhere. This is the 6th in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. As with any series, though, I'd suggest you start at the beginning so you have a sense of the changes in the characters and relationships. I'd recommend this book (and the series) to anyone who enjoys cozy mystery with a little romance.
